La storia narra della storia d’amore vissuta in uno scorcio d’estate in un luogo imprecisato della Riviera Ligure che inizia con B. ( si pensa a Bordighera). La voce narrante è quello di Elio, ragazzo diciasettenne timido e introverso, a tratti solitario, che ama più la compagnia dei libri e degli spartiti musicali che quella degli amici e delle persone che circolano nella sua casa. Il padre di Elio è un professore universitario che ha una consuetudine, invita per l’estate un ragazzo meritevole negli studi a trascorrere del tempo nella villa. Una sorta di postlaurea potremmo dire oggi. Nel 1987 tocca a Oliver, ragazzo americano di 24 anni. Elio deve cedere la sua stanza a Oliver e spostarsi in una camera più piccola della casa che è di fronte alla propria. Questo è l’inizio di quella estate e di quell’amore. I due ragazzi sono quanto di più lontano ci sia, Elio introverso e solitario, Oliver è il classico ragazzone americano energico e apparentemente ottimista a prescindere. La mamma di Elio lo chiama “movie star” proprio per l’esuberanza che lo contraddistingue. Il suo salutare con un “later” che corrisponderebbe al nostro dopo percorre tutto il libro.
Elio osserva Oliver e vuole negare il trasporto ingiustificato che prova verso quell’uomo e mentre nega, afferma. Lo osserva per cercare delle affinità, delle somiglianze. Quante volte è capitato di conoscere una persona che troviamo interessante e si cerca immediatamente di trovare punti in comune? Ho riflettuto molto su questo passaggio, su questa somiglianza che Elio trova in Oliver, anzi questo similarità che li avvicina ancora di più. Essere ebrei significa far parte di una minoranza ed essere ebrei maschi attratti da persone dello stesso genere, significa far parte di una minoranza ancora più esigua. Eppure loro due si sono incontrati. Come se nell’universo così vasto e piena di incognite, quel momento perfetto avesse trasceso qualsiasi differenz e avesse messo davanti a loro due, proprio a loro, la copia uno dell’altro. Lo stupore di fronte a qualcosa di così raro, di fronte all’immensità di altre possibilità è assolutamente sbalorditivo. L’aspettativa è la tinta che colora maggiormente le pagine del libro. La sensazione più travolgente, infatti, che irrompe dalla lettura del suo romanzo è la cosiddetta fear of missing out, e cioè la paura di perdersi qualcosa, letteralmente di essere tagliati fuori. Quante volte Elio si chiede e chiede a chi è intorno dove sia Elio? Cosa sta facendo Elio? E quanto questa sensazione che l’oggetto del nostro desiderio stia facendo chissà cosa lontano dai nostri sguardi è vera? Potremmo anche chiamare gelosia la sensazione che arriva subito dopo.
Ad un certo punto Elio inizia ad isolarsi, è indeciso se mettersi a piangere dalla disperazione oppure offrire una confessione disperata al suo amore del suo amore, allora è Oliver lo cerca e gli chiede cos’ha. Ho l’allergia, avevo risposto. Anch’io, aveva detto lui. Probabilmente è la stessa.
Questa stessa allergia è l’amore tra due uomini. Entrambi sanno che il loro sarà un amore nato già finito, con una data di termine già fissata, alla quale non si può derogare. Il loro amore non è previsto nella società del 1987. E come tutti gli amori ostacolati è ancora più forte degli altri e supera qualsiasi barriera. Ad un certo punto i due ragazzi si incontrano ed è l’amore e la passione che prendono il sopravento.
Da un’intervista di Aciman, vi riporto questo pensiero: Oliver – in un certo senso – resta più in ombra, e rimane una personalità inafferrabile. Perché per l’autore non possiamo mai conoscere davvero l’altro. Si può avere un’idea di ciò che dirà o farà, ma non sapremo mai come vive nel suo profondo. In questo modo – linearmente – Elio (e il lettore con lui) non saprà mai fino in fondo quale sarà la scelta definitiva di Oliver e il suo perché.

Ho avuto il piacere di conoscere Manuela D’ovidio che per il film ha seguito la produzione e Vanda Capriolo, l’attrice che ha interpetrato Mafalda, la tata-domestica di Elio , ed entrambe mi hanno confermato quello che dalla visione del film emerge: un film emotivamente ed esteticamente perfetto. Sugli attori non dirò molto, ma consiglio se posso di guardare la visione originale del film girato in diverse lingue, l’attore Timothée Chalamet è strepitoso, perfetto.
